An ingrown toenail is recognised by a toenail which impinges, or pierces the toe. There are several factors which can contribute to an ingrown toenail, including toenail-cutting technique, pressure from neighbouring toes, footwear, shape of the nail and trauma to the nail through work or sport activities. An ingrown toenail can be extremely painful and debilitating, especially if it becomes infected. Your podiatrist can help by trimming the affected nail to reduce the pressure, and recommending a regimen of care to keep the area clean and non-infected. If the ingrown toenail does not respond to conservative methods of care, a simple operation can be performed to permanently resolve the problem.
